Workshop PAPER, BOOK, TYPOGRAPHY Leader: Prof. Andreas Wendt, Dr. Roland Meinel, Leipzig/D
Texts, text fragments and symbols are what create the foundation for socio-political messages to be found in the shape of pages of writing, handbills, banners or books. The making of the paper, the manufacturing of the letters and plates, the layout, the design and making of the pages, and the binding of the books is closely associated with the search for contemporary communication options. The conception of a book on this aspect is so our “golden thread”.

We will work in the summer academy “flashback” in two groups – »handmade Paper« with Roland and »Art Zines« with Andreas. All of us want to operate together as group on a Art Zine and to distribute it in the end the week. We are our own editor, designer and publisher when we work at our artist publication in the magazine format. For the design and production we want to operate exclusively with the hand. We want produce the booklet as a low budget production with the copier. A sheet of handmade paper – produced with Roland – is attached to the publication.
In free work everyone can continue the experiments or change the technique and the way of production of its own work - maybe you create a digital digital magazine or print a small edition with hand.
Please bring any pencils and paints you may have, scissors, craft knives, rulers, something to lean on when you are writing, adhesive tape, rags, overalls and the like, computers and cameras (if you wish), a small collection of texts you have written or collected yourself, or your own photographs or things you have found, e.g. a box of photographs found at a flea market.
A copier and a s/w printer inclusive printer paper are available. Likewise high pressure colours and a typewriter.

Books are full of memories, such that relate to our childhood and adolescence, and also such that have to do with the sensual quality and the beauty of the written word between the covers of a book. During this workshop we want to deal with the basic material of books, paper which we will make ourselves, and also deal with text, illustrations, the organisation and typography of stories and messages, and the process of making books and artzines, artist publications in magazine format. Our inspiration should be things we find, and handiwork our method – for creating individual books and small editions.
